2023 Residency - Famous Last Words

Famous Last Words current residency is a first for us at Goodwood Theatre & Studios.

We first had the privilege of meeting James from Famous Last Words at his world premiere

performance of Home Thoughts, at the Bakehouse Theatre as part of the 2022 Adelaide Fringe Festival.

We then programmed Home Thoughts to be part of our 2022 COMEBACK season which was a huge success performing to a sold-out audience and the catalyst for this new 12-month residency with Famous Last Words.

This mutually beneficial residency is proudly supported by The Helpmann Academy and has

granted us the opportunity to provide Famous Last Words with:

  • Free rehearsal space

  • Free office space

  • Free play-reading and development space

  • Discounted performance space

  • Discounted technical equipment

  • Ongoing support and advice

  • Future opportunities and partnerships

We are thrilled to support this wonderful company and provide provocative, high-quality and

contemporary works for our audiences.

Now a few words from Famous Last Words Co-Creative Directors, Emelia Williams and James Watson…

Wow, we're already halfway through 2023 and gearing up for our next production!

Miss Julie enjoyed a wonderful run, full of high praise from critics and sold-out performances. We cannot be happier. This success has established Famous Last

Words as the company to watch out for - thank you so much to everyone who saw the production and supported us. An extra special shout out to our sponsors, The Goody, as well as those who donated to our fundraising campaign.

We're immensely grateful to our creative team for their hard work and dedication to this project.

"One of the finest performances on an Adelaide stage in a very long time" - Broadway World

But there's no rest for the wicked (even less for the righteous, they say) and before long we'll be presenting our second play for the year: PROUD.

Written by James Watson, directed by Connor Reidy, and starring the tremendously talented Henry Cooper, PROUD is the tour-de-force show you won't want to miss.

When a young man’s family start calling him a white supremacist, he is forced to examine himself and disentangle from this ideology before the people around

him get hurt. This original one-man show explores the dangers of far-right extremism, urgently responding to Australia’s relationship with itself. Asking – can we, and

should we, be proud of our country?

"I think it's really important to question the events unfolding around us. Only in the past few months have we seen a rise in neo-Nazi organisations and rallies across the country. We're having to re-ignite conversations about banning hate symbols... why? What haven't we learned from history? PROUD endeavours to go beyond the political, not just to critique this horrible ideology, but attempt to unpack why it's got this appeal for people. Why in particular young men seem drawn toward this?" – Playwright, James Watson

PROUD is showing from Saturday 29 July until Sunday 6 August. Tickets will be released soon, so don't forget to follow us on Instagram (@famouslastwords.theatre) or Facebook to stay up to date!

Don't forget that after PROUD we'll be showing Sarah Kane's seminal work 4:48 Psychosis in November.

Directed by James Watson (assisted by Emelia Williams), starring Rhys Stewart and Arran Beattie. This play will mark the return of this boundary-breaking text to South Australian stages.

Our Co-creative directors Emelia Williams and James Watson, along with the rest of our creative leadership team, are already excitedly exploring ideas and possibilities for further shows in our 2024 season. We love showcasing the best emerging artists Adelaide has

to offer and bringing top-quality theatre to Goodwood.

We're looking forward to sharing a post-show drink with you in Bills Bar!

Goodwood Theatre & Studios are extremely fortunate and proud to be able to support and nurture local artists, especially emerging aritsts, who are pushing boundaries, taking risks and creating important new works for our audiences.

We look forward in the future to creating more mutually beneficial partnerships and residencies with companies and artists from various arts disciplines.
